FAQ

How do I determine how many tiles I'll need for my project?

The best way to determine how many tiles you'll need is to measure the area to be tiled. Multiply the length by the height to arrive at the number of square feet (SF) needed. In the description of each tile you'll find its area in SF. Divide the SF needed by the SF of the individual tile to arrive at the number of tiles needed. Add 10% - 15% to allow for cut tiles at the borders of your project. If you have a non rectangular area, break it into rectangular sections and proceed as above for each section. Add the number of tiles per section to arrive at the total tiled area and then add 10% - 15% to allow for cut tiles at the borders of your project. In this example you would divide the area into 2 sections; the main section measures 12' x 1'6", the second section measures 3' x 1'6". Determine the areas. Main section is 18 SF (12 x 1.5). Second section is 4.5 SF (3 x 1.5). Total SF needed equals 22.5 SF. Our subway tile measures 0.125 SF. You will need 180 tiles (22.5/.125) plus 18 - 27 for cuts. Our 4 x 4 tile measures 0.111 SF. You will need 203 (22.5/.111 rounded up) plus 20 - 30 for cuts.

What are the actual sizes of the tiles?

The actual size of a tile tile may vary up to 1/8". For example a 4x4 tile may actually measure 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" up to 4 1/8" x 4 1/8". Similarly, a 3x6 tile may actually measure 2 7/8" x 5 7/8" up to 3 1/8" x 6 1/8". This is due to the hand crafted nature of the tiles and shrinkage during the firing process.

How do I install Tidewater Tileworks tiles?

We encourage you to have your tiles professionally installed. Hand crafted tiles by nature vary slightly in size, color and thickness. Typical grout spacing is 1/8" plus or minus. Because of this tile variation they should be laid out to determine spacing and cuts. Cuts should be made with a diamond blade wet tile saw. Holes should be drilled using a diamond bit with water. The tiles should be dipped in water prior to cutting. Cut edges should be stoned or sanded. Set the tiles in modified thinset mortar. Do not use mastic.

What kind of grout should I use?

Use sanded grout. Use grout release to make cleaning the grout from the tiles easier. We recommend taping over the raised portions of the tiles for the same reason.
